It makes it so the games have a shelf-life, a moment where there’s not enough people playing it anymore and the only way you can play with them is to painstakingly gather enough people to play it and even then a lot of the game’s content is locked away for public matchmaking. And that’s assuming the publisher doesn’t shut down the servers completely after a few years. Games like Skyrim don’t have that problem, in fact as time goes on modders make hundreds of hours more content to play."
